Movie Review: Poltergeist
If you were, for whatever reason, tempted to show a child his or her first horror movie, the best bet I can give you is the Steven Spielberg written, produced and maybe directed movie Poltergeist from 1982. It is a family movie in many ways, and while definitely chilling, there is no nudity or violence. In fact, it is rated PG (although this was before the rating of PG-13 existed). With actors ranging from good to great and enough jumps and chills to keep parents and children tossing and turning all night, Poltergeist is the closest you will get to a family friendly horror movie. There is nothing wrong with the movie technically, with the special effects, the scares, and the plot all holding up to modern standards. In fact, most of the scariest aspects are left up to the mind of the viewer, with the true plot regarding the interactions of a family dealing with a problem faced by real Americans in a fantastical way.
